The Obuasi Municipal Assembly has resolved to defer the planned removal of unauthorised trading containers within the municipality until the completion of the proposed **24-hour market at Kunka**, where affected traders are expected to be relocated.
The decision was reached during the **Second Ordinary Meeting of the Third Session of the Eighth Assembly**, following extensive deliberations on the Assembly’s urban management and decongestion programme.

After considering the matter, Assembly Members voted on the proposal, with **nine (9) members voting against the immediate removal** of the containers, while **six (6) members voted in favour** of proceeding with the exercise.

The Assembly’s decision follows a series of notices previously issued to traders operating from unauthorised containers, including a final deadline of **21 July 2026**, requiring them to vacate the sites.
During the discussions, Assembly Members acknowledged the need to address the proliferation of unauthorised structures within the municipality in order to improve urban planning, public safety, and environmental management. However, members also emphasised the importance of ensuring that affected traders are provided with a suitable alternative trading space before any enforcement action is undertaken.
Members noted that relocating traders without an appropriate alternative could adversely affect livelihoods and disrupt economic activities. They therefore advocated a phased and well-coordinated relocation process that balances effective urban management with the socio-economic welfare of traders.

The Assembly consequently resolved that the removal exercise should be deferred until the proposed **24-hour market at Kunka** is completed and ready for occupation. The facility is expected to provide a more organised, secure, and conducive trading environment for traders currently operating from unauthorised containers.
The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to promoting orderly development within the municipality while adopting consultative and people-centred approaches to implementing its policies and programmes.

Once completed, the Kunka 24-hour market is expected to support the Assembly’s broader decongestion strategy, improve trading conditions, and contribute to the municipality’s economic growth and urban transformation.
