The Obuasi Municipal Assembly (OMA), in partnership with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the Women’s Commission of the Obuasi Campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has organized a breast cancer awareness picnic in Obuasi as part of efforts to sensitize residents about the disease.

The event, led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Honourable Faustilove Appiah Kannin, featured a health walk through some principal streets of Obuasi. The procession began at the Assembly’s premises at Bedieso, passing through Mangoase, Zongo, Aunty B, Antobuase, and Santiago, before climaxing opposite the Prisons Quarters at the Central Business District (CBD).

At the CBD, a free mini health clinic was mounted to offer screening and consultation services to the public. The exercise attracted hundreds of residents, mostly women, who underwent breast examination, blood pressure checks, and received health counselling. Market women and shoppers at the CBD made up the majority of the participants.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kannin urged women to conduct regular breast self-examinations and to report any abnormalities to the nearest health facility. She emphasized that early detection saves lives and encouraged residents to adopt healthy lifestyles through balanced diets, regular exercise, and routine medical checkups.

“Breast cancer kills, and that is why awareness and early detection are critical. Let’s make regular checkups part of our lives,” the MCE advised.

The health walk and screening exercise saw active participation from staff of the Assembly, the Municipal Health Directorate, the Obuasi Government Hospital, and students from KNUST Obuasi Campus.

In total, over 900 people benefited from the free screening exercise. Organizers of the event have pledged to make it an annual activity in line with October’s global observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The exercise was under the theme: “Catch it early, treat it right, survive it”.
