As part of efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and response in Obuasi, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Honourable Faustilove Appiah Kannin, has inaugurated a 13-member Disaster Management Committee.

The committee’s core mandate is to draw up plans to prevent and mitigate disasters within the municipality. It will also maintain close collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Disaster Management Committee and carry out directives from the Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

Highlighting key disaster challenges facing Obuasi, Mr. Frank Darko of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Risk Management (DRRCRM) unit cited annual flooding and fire outbreaks—both domestic and commercial—as the two major concerns. He also mentioned windstorms, cave-ins, drowning, bird flu, COVID-19, fall armyworm, and cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) as other risks. To address these, Mr. Darko proposed regular public education, inspections of fuel stations by the Fire Service, hazard monitoring, and the use of mass media for sensitisation campaigns.

In her remarks, Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kannin urged the committee to be proactive and diligent in their duties, stressing that their work touches on saving lives and protecting property. “For your work, every minute counts, and the whole municipality will be counting on your expertise,” she emphasised.

The Ashanti Regional Deputy Director of Operations (NADMO) (Zone 1), Mr. Umar Mohammed Rabu, encouraged the committee to strictly follow the municipal disaster management plan. He further advised that the committee should hold meetings quarterly and convene emergency sessions when the need arises.

Membership of the committee includes the MCE (Chairperson), the Municipal NADMO Director as the Secretary, the Member of Parliament for Obuasi West Constituency, the Municipal Director of Health, the Municipal Police Commander, the Municipal Fire Officer, the Municipal Information Officer, the Municipal Director of Education, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer, the Municipal Planning Officer, the Municipal Social Development and Welfare Officer, the Deputy Regional Director (NADMO), the Presiding Member, and the Chairperson of the DRRCRM.

The committee members were officially sworn into office by the MCE.
