Market queens and transport leaders in Obuasi have thrown their support behind the Obuasi Municipal Assembly’s planned exercise to decongest the Central Business District (CBD) and major streets of the town.
The leaders described the current situation—where hawkers occupy streets and cause heavy traffic—as disturbing and harmful to both traders and customers. “Sometimes it becomes tough for us to get a place for our trucks to park and offload,” one trader lamented during the meeting.
At a stakeholder consultation held on today, the Assembly outlined measures to take effect from Monday, September 29, 2025. Selling on the streets will be prohibited, and affected traders are expected to return to their sheds inside the market. Cargo trucks will only be permitted to offload goods between 6 p.m. and 9 a.m. outside this period, traders are advised to use the Bediem Market or Black Park for offloading. The directive will also cover shops along the Obuasi High Street and Kunka Junction.
On transport, Mr. Burts Nkrumah, Head of Transport at the Assembly, announced that all temporary stations at the Obuasi Central Mosque area will be closed, with operators directed back to the main lorry station. Meanwhile, leaders of the tricycle (pragya) operators appealed to the Assembly to fix the road leading to their designated station opposite the Prisons Quarters.
The Assembly indicated that preparations are far advanced for the start of the exercise and assured that public sensitization would be intensified in the coming days, especially through the local media. Present at the meeting were the Metro Guard Commander and his deputy, the Municipal Transport Officer, and the Municipal Information Officer.
