The Obuasi Municipal Assembly has announced concrete steps to ensure the full operationalization of the Kunka Market by the close of 2025.

When completed, the market will become the second largest in the municipality after the Obuasi Central Market. Authorities say its revival will help decongest the Kunka junction of hawkers, ease traffic, and improve the outlook of Obuasi, especially as Kunka serves as a gateway to the township from both Kumasi and Dunkwa-On-Offin.

At a Development Planning Sub-Committee meeting held at the Assembly’s Conference Room yesterday, members outlined measures to address the challenges that has culminated in the underutilization of the market. Some of the interventions proposed improving upon the deplorable roads leading to and exiting the market site, ridding off the drug addicts and peddlers to guarantee the security of the area as well as allocating terminals for tricycle (pragya) operators and activating bus terminals to streamline transport activities.

Speaking after the meeting, the Municipal Planning Officer, Mr. Prince Owusu Agyemang Esq, disclosed that, it is the desire of the Honourable Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kannin to witness the market operates at full capacity before Christmas. Accordingly, the Assembly has drawn up short, medium, and long-term plans to restore the market to its intended purpose. “one of the reasons for reviving the Kunka Market is to decongest the central business district of Obuasi and to clear hawkers from the roads, while also serving the larger population from Kunka to Kyekyewere,” he stated as some of the short-term measures.

The meeting also reviewed the proposed Action Plan for the municipality in 2026. Once adopted by the General Assembly in October, the plan will serve as the blueprint for the Assembly’s programmes and projects for the coming year.
