In a unanimous cheers to the President His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, Assembly Members of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly have praised him for the institution and payment of their allowance.

In an acknowledgement and appreciation for the payment, the Assembly member for the Anyinam Electoral Area Solomon Amoako Acheampong made a statement that the president be applauded for the initiative; “I think the president and his government have done well in the payment of our allowance and that they deserve some applause from us” he said. In a spontaneous response, all the members shouted “ yeeyee” in agreement with what their colleague has said.

Some other members who contributed to this statement added that, they are looking forward that, the allowance may be converted into a salary. This they are praying the government may look at in the future. However, they were happy for this gesture by the government. These were statements made on the floor of the house during its first ordinary meeting of the second session of the eighth Assembly.

Until recently, the Assembly work was voluntary, where members of the Assembly were not put on any form of payment by the central government. The initiative to give allowance to Assembly Members is in a fulfilment of a campaign promise made by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the run up to the 2024 electioneering campaign. These Assembly members were excited about this; as the allowance has come to relieve them of some financial challenges associated with their office; they said.
