The Kunka Market in the Obuasi Municipality is set to undergo a major transformation, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi, Honourable Faustilove Appiah Kannin, has announced.

According to the MCE, the redevelopment will be driven by the Government’s flagship 24-Hour Economy Markets Project, aimed at modernizing trading centres across the country. She revealed that work would commence soon, following positive feedback from government assessors who inspected the market.
Hon. Faustilove made these remarks at a Town Hall Meeting organized by the Obuasi Municipal Assembly on Tuesday, 21st November 2025. She emphasised that upon completion, the Kunka Market would become a fully modernized trading hub befitting the status of Obuasi.

The MCE further appealed to traders who have abandoned their sheds and shops at the market to return and make use of the space as the redevelopment begins.
PROJECTS LINED UP FOR 2026
The MCE also shared highlights of key projects the Assembly intends to implement next year. These include several transformational initiatives in basic schools, aimed at ensuring that both staff and pupils have access to potable water and decent places of convenience.
ASSEMBLY FINANCES EXPLAINED
Addressing the gathering, the Municipal Budget Officer, Madam Edna Vivian Arkoh, outlined the funding sources for the projects earmarked for 2026.
She identified the following sources:
Internally Generated Funds (IGF)
District Assembly Common Fund (DACF)
District Development Fund (DDF)
Government of Ghana (GoG)
Donor support
She revealed that the Assembly is expected to generate at least GH₵23 million from IGF next year, with a substantial portion dedicated to community development. Madam Arkoh urged residents to support the Assembly by honouring their tax and fee obligations.

MEDIUM TO LONG-TERM DEVELOPMENT PLANS
The Municipal Planning Officer, Mr. Prince Agyemang Esq, presented the Assembly’s medium- to long-term development agenda. He highlighted the Artisan Site project at New Baakoyeden as a major intervention, noting that the Assembly is working on a partnership deal with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to develop the site into a state-of-the-art industrial enclave.
The Municipal Works Engineer, Mr. David Adjei, also presented pictorial slides showing the progress of ongoing projects within the municipality. He further outlined the new projects scheduled for commencement in the coming year.
NEW COORDINATING DIRECTOR INTRODUCED
As part of the Town Hall Meeting, the MCE formally introduced the new Coordinating Director of the Assembly, Madam Joyce Akosua Angmortheh. She joins the Obuasi Municipal Assembly from the Ahanta West Municipal Assembly in the Western Region, taking over from Mr. Anthony Kwennin, who has been transferred to the New Juaben North Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region.

In her remarks, Madam Angmortheh assured the gathering of her readiness to contribute her expertise to the development of Obuasi. She dismissed the notion that women in leadership cannot work harmoniously, stating:
“I am here to serve the MCE and the Municipality. I am not here to compete with my MCE. Together, we shall demonstrate that women in managerial positions can work effectively and in unity.”
SUCCESSFUL ENGAGEMENT WITH STAKEHOLDERS
The town hall meeting was well attended by traditional and religious leaders, market women, the Presiding Member, Assembly Members, and opinion leaders from across Obuasi. Participants raised various questions and concerns, all of which were addressed by the MCE and relevant Assembly officials.
