About 95% of PWDs in Obuasi have a source of livelihood thanks to Disability Fund – MCE

The Chief Executive for Obuasi Honorable Elijah Adansi-Bonah has hinted that most persons living with disability in the Obuasi Municipality have a source of livelihood due to the impact of the disability fund of the district Assemblies common fund.

The Disability Common Fund (DCF) is a social protection program aimed at alleviating poverty among persons with disabilities in Ghana. In 2006, the government of Ghana established the DACF to provide financial support to people with disabilities. The fund sets aside 2% of its resources for people with disabilities to use for medical care, school fees, training, and other needs.

Currently, 3% of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) quarterly released to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) is earmarked for Persons With Disabilities.

Speaking at a short ceremony to donate items to some PWDs, Honorable Adansi- Bonah said the fund has supported most of PWDs who hitherto did not have any means of livelihood hence begged or relied on people for survival.

In all, 21 people were given items which included Knitting machines, fufu pounding machines and industrial sewing. Some of them were also given medical and educational support.

He also mentioned the Obuasi rehabilitation and training center which was an OMA Ghana Disability Federation and AngloGold Ashanti funded project which is going through appropriate certification and accreditation from the Ghana Education Service to officially train PWDs to acquire skills in order to support their livelihoods.

In all GH81,000 was spent on procuring items and supporting the Educational and health needs of the beneficiaries. He said the items has been embossed to prevent the beneficiaries from selling their products but rather used them for their intended purpose.

The beneficiaries who spoke to the media talked about the importance of the disability fund said the fund has supported their livelihoods and made life comfortable for them.
