The Commander for the Ashanti South Regional Police Command DCOP Eric Winful has called for collaboration between Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies and the Police service as major stakeholders, in the quest to protect lives and properties and to foster development.
He said both institutions are expected to work together to combat crime and protect the lives of the people in their jurisdiction.
DCOP Winful made these comments on Thursday, 9th February 2023 when he paid a courtesy call on the Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi as part of a day’s working visit to Obuasi.
The visit among others, was to ascertain challenges with policing in the District and to find measures to deal with them.
The Ghana Police Service as part of efforts to ensure efficient and effective policing have created two new additional administrative regions, in the Ashanti Region
The new regions, carved out of its existing Ashanti Regional Command, have been named Ashanti North (Mampong), Ashanti Central (Kumasi) and the Ashanti South( Bekwai) regional police commands.
Obuasi Municipality, however, falls under the Ashanti South Regional Police command.
DCOP Eric Winful was accompanied by ASP Princeton Peasah Darkwa, Regional PID Director, ASP Bright Acheampong, Regional Staff officer (Ashanti South), Supt Simon Denteh, Regional Crime officer, Chief Superintendent Joseph Nyaaba, Obuasi Divisional Police Commander and Chief Superintendent Elizabeth Obenewaa Viney, Obuasi Municipal Police commander.
The Ashanti South Regional Police commander seized the opportunity to highlight on major security challenges facing Obuasi as well as some constraints in policing within the Municipality and called on the Municipal Assembly to intervene in assisting the Police in their operations.
Chief Superintendent Elizabeth Obenewaa Viney in her remarks lauded the Chief Executive for the Obuasi Municipal Assembly Hon Elijah Adansi-Bonah for supporting the Police service. She said the MCE has played a key role in the operations of the Police command over the years which has culminated in boosting the morale of the service in fighting crime.
She highlighted on the successes chalked by the Police in recent times which include enforcing a directive by the MUSEC for bars and pubs to close at 11pm and to also install security cameras at their premises. She averred that enforcing such directives has resulted in the reduction of criminal activities at such places especially during the night.
She also reflected on other security challenges facing the Municipal command and called on the newly created Regional Command to intervene.
Honorable Elijah Adansi-Bonah, MCE for Obuasi thanked the Regional Commander for the visit and provided information on measures taken by the Assembly to protect the lives of the people in the Municipality.
He however said issues of Gangsterism and Galsmsey continue to be a major challenge facing the Municipality which he called for more collaborative efforts between all stakeholders to nip them in the bud.
The Municipal Coordinating Director Francis Dwira Darko and other Heads of Department were all present at the meeting.
